It really was. It was our first mission as a team. Not--not all of us made it back.

That's not how teambuilding is supposed to go. We did lasertag.

Yeah, it really was. There were the original five of us and the UP just kind of . . . recruited a bunch of other teens with superpowers and threw us all together. That was our first mission as a full team.

[he had his neck broken after getting too close]

Lasertag sounds like a lot more fun.

Your first mission was a brain eating monstrous spider? They couldn't start you guys with shoplifters or bank robbers?

It was except my partner is a fucking cheater. Pretty sure she did something to her vest to make it not register shots.

Fifteen's a grown up where I'm from, remember? They figured we could handle it just fine.

What? Now that's no fair. And no fun. Part of the fun in a game like that is being able to trash-talk the winner.

It's not about age, just usually you want to start people out small and learn the ropes. That would be like my first solo flight being a night mission with live fire while running out of fuel.

It's going to be great. There are so many places left as untouched forest, you'll love it. And when people need to pay attention, I'll make sure that they do.

I wish we had that. The forests are all getting logged and they keep cutting chunks away to build houses. It's fucking with all the wildlife.

Are there still wolves?

From what I remember of Earth history, they got very close to ruining their entire environment. It was only at the last minute that they stopped and realized what they were doing.

Yes, there are. They're a protected species.

Really? I'm so glad.

I never really got to spend much time in nature--mother is all about the big cities--but I'd love it if you showed me.

Big cities are okay I guess. I mean the foods better anyway. But I don't like all the people. I had to go to New York for a training thing and it was kind of terrible.

But not the sandwiches they were fucking top notch.

You know, you're about the sixth or seventh person from Earth I've met who's mentioned New York. Where is it, exactly?

I miss sandwiches.

[yes, more veggie sandwiches would be nice]

One of our biggest cities. There's New York. Chicago. San Francisco. Lots of people and skyscrapers or whatever.

It's on the east coast. Where the Statue of Liberty is if that thing is still there in the future.

I've heard of San Francisco, but not the other two. And the Statue of Liberty is in Metropolis, Earthgov's capital.

Metropolis?

I guess that's a better name than New York. No one knows what York is. I don't know what York is.

[Other than the peppermint patty kind.]

Yeah. It's huge, it's the biggest city on Earth. It was the home of Superman? Does that sound familiar?

[she laughs] I have no sprocking clue what a York is. Let alone a new one.

Yeah I know who Superman is.

[He figures naming a town after the birthplace of a fictional character is as good as anything else. ]

I'm from a place called Fall's End. Which is at the end of a river with a waterfall. So at least that fucking makes sense. The Whitetail mountains are full of whitetail deer. Henbane River is chock full of henbane plants during the spring. All that makes a lot more sense than whatever the hell a York is.

Oh, good! I mention Superman to most people and they look at me like I'm crazy.

It sounds like it must be beautiful. [and she laughs warmly] And yes, your hometown's name makes a lot more sense than a York.

It really is. All lush and green with wildlife everywhere.

Or well, it was before the cult moved in and started drugging the animals and leaving corpses everywhere.
