sorry you will have to do it the old fashioned way by emailing it to everyone you know if you dont comply in the next 5 seconds the butterfly will show up in your mirror and kill you probably
[Carlisle's had several days to mull things over, and he's not going to make amends for all the terrible things he's done by doing more terrible things. In comes a message to Pratt's inbox:]
I wanted to apologize for my behavior, if you would allow it.
[Pratt's going to get a video message no matter where he is right now. Kieran's kind of going technology happy now that he's learning more and more how to use these things.]
Hey Pratt! A-Are you around? I wanted to talk to ya about maybe findin' some more livestock.
[The last person Carlisle contacts from the incident in the agricultural zone is Deputy Pratt. He should have called earlier, he knows, but he was ultimately terrified of the rejection he assumes is inevitable. The man is supposedly his friend in more than one world. He possesses a rock the other Carlisle made, something he'd have never considered for even a second if the deputy hadn't meant a great deal to him. Pratt also has -- or perhaps had -- all the faith in Carlisle when the clergyman has none for himself.
And now, he's possibly got an injured hand, as well -- a reward for his misplaced trust. Could the medical ward deal with necrosis? Just how far had the decay gone? Was his hand forever ruined, and all because he was trying to help someone who was no longer the friend he knew, but instead more monster than man? Pratt shouldn't have cared for a twice-cursed -- he must have realized that by now.
Regardless of what his doubts and spiraling self-defeat tell him, Carlisle knows he has to call, to at least apologize. He has more amends to make, but he should start with the barest of apologies. Maybe the way he'll make this up to Pratt is by never speaking to him again. Surely that's doable -- that's something even he can't mess up.]
Deputy Pratt.
[Yep, good greeting. Nice and devoid of emotion, despite how wildly his feelings have swirled within him since his arrival. He considers asking if they can talk; he wonders if he should lay himself bare at the deputy's feet and ask for forgiveness that he does not feel he deserves in the slightest. Instead, he just blurts out what is at the top of his mind the moment he finds his voice again.]
I'm sorry. I— [Sigh.] I am sorry. I should have called. I should have stopped. I should have done anything else.
[Pratt himself had meant to call or to check up on Carlisle, though he realized belatedly he didn't know where the man lived. But after the incident with Ben, where Pratt had needed to be dragged out of a hallway because he couldn't function due to hearing some music - he hadn't felt up to it. In fact Pratt hasn't been feeling up to much recently, and he's currently laying in bed, idly picking at the gauze around his injured hand while the wolf naps nearby. She probably needs to go out soon, but Pratt doesn't want to get up; overcome with thoughts and emotions and self loathing he can't get rid of.]
You don't have to apologize. Everything worked out, we got Kieran to the medbay and got him stabilized. It'll be okay. He'll be okay. Eventually.
[That's what he assumes this call is about, that Carlisle is worried about Kieran and not because he'd made a whole host of monsters that had attacked them.]
[Having tried to prepare himself for complete and utter dismissal like the vile creature he is, Carlisle is taken aback when Pratt just... insists things will be okay. That they will work out. That they did work out. It sounds like the kind of lie fabricated to make someone feel better when everything that could go wrong has. The pressure of Carlisle's guilt causes his voice to crack.]
Eventually is not good enough. It's not even adequate compared to what I put you through. What I put your friends through.
[Which he belatedly realizes is the problem that Carlisle is concerned about. Now that he gets what this is about he can actually imagine Carlisle wringing his hands and every nervous tick he's ever seen him do.]
I mean some warning that your healing eats living things and we'd have been a bit better prepped. Maybe we need to make some sort of defense force around you when you heal to beat back whatever happens.
It sucks, but it's done now and now we know for the future.
Like a local legend. I dunno if you have them in your world, but in mine there's a lake where people claim to have seen a sea monster but no one can prove it so most people don't believe it, but some swear it's true.
[ It's a couple minutes before she responds, hope that's not too worrying. When she does, it's audio, and she sounds short of breath and a little bit frantic. ]
Actual emergency! It - it's Carlisle, something's really wrong with him!

You're fine. Though I'm sorry you don't remember anything I'm talking about.

I was shown proof that all you said was true. I am sorry I refused to believe you.

It's fine you don't need to apologize. I dunno how you're supposed to react to a thing you don't remember.
