I know this is gonna sound . . . trite? But I really am sorry.

I understand. Some things are hard to talk about.

[she'd be of the opinion that he owed nothing to someone who'd torture him and keep him prisoner. less than nothing. and that he did the right thing when he helped the others escape. and that he was very brave]

I don't know! You'd probably have to ask the aliens, but if you explained the situation to them, they'd have to help you. They'd be--well, they'd be complete and total nassheads if they didn't.

I don't think they have to do anything. But maybe. The one I talked to wasn't so bad. I guess.

[she smiles warmly back]

Right, right, build up a friendship with that one and maybe they'll intervene on your behalf? I haven't actually tried talking to them yet. I guess I should get on that?

I feel a little bad for him honestly. Hope. He reminds me of a rookie that got thrown in the deep end on their first day. He's trying but he doesn't know what he's doing, or how to do it.

And everyone seems to want him dead.

Oh, grife, really? That sounds like a shame. So a being that's meant to embody hope can't seem to inspire it himself? Or am I getting this wrong.

I don't want him dead. I only want him and his fellows to stop messing with my head. I can feel emotions on my own just fine.

Yeah they're not really good at what they're supposed to be doing. Or he isn't anyway. I haven't talked to the others.

I wonder if maybe he sucks because no one here is hopeful about anything and he's starving to death.

I really have been remiss in not talking to them. All of them. I should have at least tried.

[a short laugh] Maybe! I haven't met many hopeful people here, just people trying to get by.

I haven't gone into any of their temples, I'm not sure if they live there. Maybe you could talk to them face to face even.

How do I do it? Do I just say "'alien', I want to talk to you' and they respond?

I'd guess they'd prefer you call them by their names. But honestly I'm not sure how you contact them.

Maybe you can text them on the phones.

[she laughs] Probably, yeah. I wasn't gonna call them aliens to their faces. That would be rude. Mother, wherever she is, would have an aneurysm.

I guess it's worth a try?

Let me know how it goes. Maybe they're more reasonable than we thought.

[look at him almost hopeful.]

Maybe? I'd like to think so, that we can find at least a little bit of common ground. After all, as much as we need them, they need us just as badly.

It's true. You'd think they'd be a lot more helpful considering we're basically feeding them.

[she nods]

Not only that, if those Null ever show up again, we'll be expected to protect them. That's how it was the last time the Null came.

If they want protection they should be giving us guns. Do they want us to arrow a bunch of transforming robots to death?

[unphase]

Yeah, pretty much. At least that's what I've heard from people who were here back then.

That's going to go terribly. I wonder how many people died defending them.

[Sure Hope can bring them back, but that's not the point.]

[she sighs] From what I've heard. . . it was a lot. And Hope was so strained from the attack, the resurrections. Weren't exactly perfect.

Do I want to know?

I do. What went wrong?

Nothing like missing limbs or anything, thank grife. But people came back unable to see or hear or speak. And they had to wait for the aliens to regain their strength to have those problems fixed, which apparently took a while.

Eugh. Okay that's awful. I'm not sure if being unable to see is any better than missing an arm. Especially in unfamiliar territory like here.

Man, that better not happen again.

Being blind around here would be pretty rough. You'd have to find someone you really trusted to guide you around. It would make getting dressed hard, making food hard, even eating food hard.

I hope it doesn't, but I don't know if it won't.

I'd probably accidentally walk into the ocean and drown.

[Or likely bash his head into a wall and then die of a concussion.]

We've got a small force of people willing to protect this place, so that's a start I guess. But it won't be enough if that's what happened last time.

We seriously need more guns.

You wouldn't. I'd keep an eye on you, make sure you were all right. You know, assuming I can keep an eye on you.

How would we get them?
