[why wouldn't she check in with him? it's been a long storm]

I hope that it all goes well.

And I'm fine. I got accepted as a Junior Guard member, so I was there to help the new people get to safety. The monsters were a lot worse than the ones that came in with me.

Hey you're an official officer now! Congrats!

What were they this time? I didn't get to the colosseum, I was trying to stormproof my windows.

[she blushes and giggles]

Not officially an officer. Somebody still has to go with me on patrols. But if I prove myself, I'll get to go on my own.

They were huge! And really, really stupid. I think they were called ogres?

Ogres? Like.. the big giant troll looking things?

[He is not a fantasy buff, he doesn't know the difference between ogres and trolls. Or orcs for that matter.]

Anything interesting during patrols? Or is it mostly routine?

Let's see, how to describe them. . . they were really tall, the size of a four story building and muscular, they had horns and sharp teeth, and they had purple skin. And their blood was disgusting.

[neither is she. she's more of a romance kind of girl]

Mostly routine except for the time I had to save two boys who'd tried to take out a boat during the storm.

Four story tall is way bigger than I was thinking. What'd you do with them?

[He remembers the whole 'no killing' thing. Does that mean there's a bunch of 4-story tall purple guys running around the island?]

Not too bad then, that sounds like my job before things went crazy. Patrol around and then occasionally answer a nuisance call about drunk fishermen who lost control of their boat and were spinning in circles in the middle of a lake.

...I had to kill them in the end. They weren't stopping. They kept attacking people.

[which is eating at her conscience. there's no way she'll be able to mention this to the Legion, they'd be horrified.

she giggles] Yeah, that's about how it goes. Although, they weren't drunk, they just underestimated the size of the waves.

Sometimes you have to compromise your morals for survival. It's one of those things no one likes to talk about.. but it's necessary.

[Well that's a little dark.]

I wonder if we have any surfers, probably would have been good for them. At least I think that's how it works if movies have taught me anything about surfboarding.

[she bites her lower lip and looks down for a moment, then looks back up]

I guess so. I don't know how I'll explain it back home, that's all.

It probably would've been if it was just the wind and the rain. Add lightning to the mix and that's asking to be fried.

[He shrugs. She doesn't want them to know, they'd probably rather not know, problem solved!]

Isn't that edgy and extreme though? I feel like someone out there would think it's the ultimate adrenaline rush.

But. . . we're friends?

[she thought that friends were supposed to tell each other everything]

Someone, maybe. Nobody I saw while on patrol. [she laughs] That doesn't mean that nobody did it.

It's up to you, but if you think they won't understand it might be better to not bring it up at all.

[For instance he's never going to bring up the 'forced to eat people' thing to any of his friends. Some things are better left unsaid.]

Maybe when the weather clears up people will do more stuff like that. Surfing. Hiking. Rock climbing. It'd be nice to have a little normalcy around here.

I don't want to get complacent, but ... Not being on edge constantly would be nice.

...maybe you're right. On UP worlds--most of them, anyway--we're raised to believe that every life is precious. Something like this. . . they wouldn't get it.

[a completely understandable thing to leave out of day to day conversation]

Maybe? I've never surfed before. The water near Metropolis wasn't the right kind for it. It always looked fun, though.

Are you on edge constantly?

I tend to be. It's in my nature, gotta be prepared for when the next terrible thing happens. But I'm trying to not be anymore, I'm gonna burn out. I know that. I can tell. It's happened before.

Maybe I should take up surfing.

[He snickers. He would be terrible at it if his past attempts at water skiing are any indication.]

I'm gonna help replant some of the trees. Now that the orchard is gone we've lost a lot of green, and some people were saying they could get seeds from somewhere and we could regrow it. It'll take years to bear fruit, but even just saplings would be better than stumps.

If there's anything I can do to help you, please let me know, okay?

I should too. It would be something fun!

[she looks 100% sincere and earnest]

So am I. It's terrible, what happened to the orchard and to the park. It makes this place seem even more dreary than it already is.

[He really means that, she's the most helpful person he's met... ever honestly. Even back home no one really cared about each other, everyone was preoccupied with their own lives. And post cult with their own survival.]

All for some boats that they may never use again. I haven't even heard if they found what they were looking for.

You'd think that they could at least be used for deep sea fishing. I wouldn't eat the fish, but I bet a lot of other people would. And I think they found what they were looking for? At least I saw something on the network about it.

Oh true. I didn't think about that. If I didn't get seasick I'd think about going fishing, I bet it's nice out on the ocean.

Yeah I saw some people fighting about what to do with it. I'm going to let them sort that out. I'll be more interested if it does what they say it does.

You get seasick? That's too bad. I bet it is nice out on the ocean, too. I usually don't bother with the boats, though, since I can fly.

So did I. I didn't know any of the people fighting, so I thought, well. That they wouldn't appreciate me butting in. I hope that it does do what they say it will do, but what if we can't actually use them because using them will drive whoever does insane?

To be fair, I'm not really sure. But I get queasy on long car rides and roller coasters and planes, so I'm assuming that a boat rocking on the waves won't do good things to my stomach.

Same, I don't think I've been here long enough to have an opinion. As for how they work, someone would probably volunteer, for the greater good. I could see that happening.

[ Pratt potentially might volunteer if given the chance. His brain is so screwed up sometimes he's not sure he could tell the difference. Well, most of the time, sometimes he has normal conversations like this one and he feels like the old, pre-cult Pratt.]

Oooh. Probably it wouldn't. How do you get between islands or are shorter trips okay?

I have opinions--plenty of them! I just didn't think anyone would listen to me. [she gets a concerned look on her face] Even with the risk of being driven mad? It's not like this place has 30th century medicines and treatments to help them.

The short trips have been fine, but I didn't try and go to other islands during the storm when it was real choppy or anything. I'm not about to tempt it.

Some people don't have anything to loose. If there's no one waiting for you back home, what difference does it make what happens to you here? Also some people are dead, or dying. I assume if the door works the way people say it will, they'll go back to being dead.

[she nods] Going on a boat during that would be foolish. I had to rescue two boys to tried. [listen to her calling them boys when they were probably older than she is.

and she bites her lip briefly. she knows she's likely one of those dead or dying in her world, but she can't bring herself to say it out loud yet] But what if they stayed here or went to another world?

Have you ever seen someone who's insane? Truly insane?

They wouldn't notice where they went.

[she thinks back to the White Triangle racists that the Legion was trying to hold off when Tinya was pulled here. there was no reasoning with them, no room for discussion. they were intent on their goal of destroying Earth with no mercy]
